The small print
Privacy notice
storygaffer doesn't ask for your details, doesn't track you, and doesn't sell anything about you. This notice explains the small amount of personal data that is involved in running the site, and your rights over it.
Who we are
This website, www.storygaffer.com, is run by storygaffer, an independent project based in England. For data protection purposes, storygaffer is the controller of the personal data described here. You can contact us about anything in this notice at info@storygaffer.com.
What we collect, and why
When you visit the site
There are no accounts, sign-up forms, analytics, advertising or social media trackers on this site. Our fonts, maps and code are all served from our own site, so visiting doesn't pass your details to Google or anyone else.
Like every website, our host, Cloudflare, has to handle some technical information to send you the pages: your IP address, the type of browser and device you're using, the page you asked for, the page that linked you here, and the time. This is used only to deliver the site and to protect it from attacks and abuse.
- Lawful basis: legitimate interests. We need this to run a working, secure website.
- How long it's kept: only for as long as Cloudflare needs it for those purposes, under its own retention rules. We don't use it to work out who you are.
When you email us
If you email us, for example with a story idea or a correction, we receive your email address, your name if you include it, and whatever you write. We use it to read and reply to you, and to look into story ideas and corrections.
- Lawful basis: legitimate interests. You've contacted us and we want to reply.
- How long it's kept: up to two years after we last hear from you, then deleted. We may keep a correction for longer, without your personal details, so the record of what we changed is accurate.
When you follow us on social media
Our Instagram, Facebook and X links take you to those platforms, where their own privacy policies apply. We don't put their tracking or embedded content on this site.
Who we share it with
We never sell or rent personal data, and we don't share it for marketing. Two companies handle data on our behalf, under contracts that require them to keep it safe:
- Cloudflare, which hosts and protects the website.
- Google, which runs our email (Google Workspace).
We would only share personal data with anyone else if the law required it.
Data sent outside the UK
Cloudflare and Google may process data in the United States and other countries. Where they do, it is protected by UK adequacy regulations (including the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework) or by contract terms approved by the UK Information Commissioner.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you
- ask us to correct it if it's wrong
- ask us to delete it
- ask us to limit how we use it, or object to us using it
- ask for it in a format you can take elsewhere, where that applies
To use any of these rights, email info@storygaffer.com. It's free, and we'll reply within one month.
Complaints
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, please tell us first so we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the UK's data protection regulator: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or 0303 123 1113.
Children
The site is for a general audience and isn't aimed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal data from children.
Changes to this notice
If we change how we handle data, we'll update this page and the date below.
